Organic Tomatillo Verde
10 Seeds Pack
Tomatillos are small fruits from the nightshade family, resembling miniature tomatoes but with their own unique characteristics. These low, sprawling plants typically grow to a height of 0.5 to 1 meter (1.5 to 3 feet) and are known for their prolific production of husked fruits that hang from the plant like delicate Chinese lanterns. Each fruit is encased in a papery, veiny husk that starts green and gradually dries, turning light brown and splitting open as the fruit matures.
Tomatillos measure around 5 centimetres (2 inches) in diameter and are most commonly bright green, though some varieties may ripen to yellow or purple. The fruit is covered in a sticky residue that is easily rinsed off. The plant itself features bright green, slightly hairy stems and oval-shaped, toothed leaves, adding to its distinctive appearance. Beneath the glossy outer skin of the fruit lies dense, cloudy white-green flesh that encases numerous small white seeds. Tomatillos have a fresh, tangy aroma with hints of citrus, reminiscent of limes and green tomatoes. Unlike their tomato relatives, tomatillos are harvested while still immature to preserve their tart, zesty flavour
PLANTING&GROWING
Tomatillo Verde is a versatile plant that can be grown in garden beds or containers, making it an excellent choice for balcony gardens or sunny indoor spaces. If using a container, select a pot at least 8 inches wide with drainage holes to ensure proper water flow. As tomatillos have sensitive roots, repotting is best avoided, so start with a suitable growing container from the beginning.
Before planting, soak the seeds for a few hours, preferably overnight, to encourage germination. If starting seeds indoors, disinfect all pots, trays, seed cells, and covers to prevent damping off. Tomatillo Verde thrives in heat and humidity, preferring well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. While clays and loams produce the highest yields, lighter soils that warm and drain quickly can lead to earlier harvests, especially when planted on a slight south or southeast-facing slope. Tomatillos tolerate slightly acidic soils with a pH as low as 6.0 but perform best in soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Consistent moisture is essential to prevent blossom-end rot, but waterlogged soils should be avoided.
The plants are large and sprawling, so space them at least 2 ½ feet apart to allow adequate room for growth. As tomatillos are not self-fruitful, plant at least two near each other to ensure proper pollination. Natural pollinators like honeybees, bumblebees, and wind are sufficient to support fruit production.
Like their cousin the tomato, tomatillos are heavy feeders. Fertilize with an organic blend rich in phosphorus and potassium and moderate in nitrogen to support healthy growth and fruiting. To reduce the risk of root diseases, avoid planting tomatillos in soils that have recently grown tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, or eggplants for at least two years. Additionally, keep them away from members of the Brassicaceae family.
Once harvested, tomatillo fruits may have a sticky film that can be easily washed off. For storage, keep the fruits in their husks and refrigerate them, but note that they will only last for a couple of weeks, so use them quickly for the best flavour and freshness.
