The Purple Top White Globe Turnip has a historical lineage dating back to the pre-1880s and continues to be a popular choice for cultivation today. Characterized by smooth and round roots, this turnip variety boasts a visually striking purplish top above the ground, adding to its aesthetic appeal. For optimal quality, the recommended harvest time is when the root reaches approximately 10cm in diameter. However, this versatile turnip variety maintains good quality even when allowed to grow to a larger diameter. The Purple Top White Globe Turnip is recognized for its very fine and fragrant white flesh.

          PLANTING&GROWING

Soaking seeds is a crucial step that should be carried out at least a few hours before planting, ideally overnight. To ensure a healthy start when initiating seeds indoors and to prevent damping off, it is imperative to thoroughly disinfect all pots, plastic grow trays, seed cells, and seedling tray covers before reuse.

Turnip seedlings have a delicate nature and do not transplant well, so it is recommended to sow the seeds directly into the garden. Plant the seeds 12mm (½in) deep, with rows spaced 15cm (6in) apart. However, for maincrop varieties sown in July and August, a larger spacing of 25cm (10in) is advised to allow ample room for the larger roots to develop, especially for harvesting in November and December. Thinning is a common practice, and the thinning from crowded areas can be harvested and consumed as greens. If the intention is to grow turnips solely for greens, avoiding thinning is recommended.

In adherence to good agricultural practices, consider rotating turnips and other brassica family members every two years to prevent the buildup of diseases in the soil. A beneficial rotation includes pairing turnips with beans and pea crops, promoting soil health. Turnips also thrive when planted alongside peas and onions, as well as other members of the onion family. However, it's advisable to avoid planting turnips near other root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and radishes, as they may compete for the same resources. This strategic placement ensures optimal growth and resource utilization for a successful turnip harvest.
